Monaco: 5 Things We Learned

Last Friday saw the IAAF Diamond League touch down in Monaco, in yet another crucial night for the Diamond Race. We run you through all the key developments.

1. Schippers on course for two Trophies

Dafne Schippers already headed up the rankings in the women’s 200m Diamond Race, and victory in Monaco meant that she leapfrogged Elaine Thompson and English Gardner to steal the lead in the 100m Diamond Race as well. Already European Champion, could this be the year that Schippers comes back from Olympic glory to claim two Diamond Trophies?

2. Manangoi won’t let Kiprop go

Elijah Monotei Manangoi has only won one of five meetings in the men’s 1500m Diamond Race so far. Yet his consistent podium finishes have kept him on the tail of leader and Diamond Trophy holder Asbel Kiprop, Kiprop’s disappointing fifth place finish in Monaco meant that Manangoi was able to shorten the gap even further after finishing second. He is now just three points behind his compatriot.

3. Points fallout from McLeod’s fall

After two wins in two in Doha and Shanghai, Omar McLeod’s astonishing season had seen him surge to the top of the standings in the men’s 110m hurdles Diamond Race. Orlando Ortega had since caught up, and is now 10 points clear of McLeod after the Jamaica’s dramatic fall in Monaco. Ortega, who only narrowly missed out on the Diamond Trophy last season, will take some beating in the last three two rounds.

4. Adams up for the fight

After missing out on most of last season, four-time Diamond Race winner was back for more glory this season. With Tia Brooks notching up victories and Anita Marton racking up points, however, Adams has been plunged into a fierce three horse race for the Diamond Trophy. She landed the latest blow, overcoming both Brooks and Marton to win in Monaco and pull 11 points clear at the top.

5. Stefanidi shines on

Fresh from being crowned European Champion, you could have forgiven Katerina Stefanidi for letting her thoughts wander to Rio at the moment. But there was none of it from the Greek pole vaulter. Completely focused on her task, she overcame stiff competition to take a third Diamond Race victory this season and pull 16 points ahead of Yarisley Silva at the top of the standings.
