Diamond League 2017 Explained: Track

Last week, we announced a new format. Here we take a closer look at how the superstars of the track can race to Diamond League glory next summer.

Next year’s Diamond League will see athletes competing within their discipline for a place in the Final at either Zürich or Brussels. Whoever wins the Final will be crowned Diamond League Champion.

Each Diamond Discipline on the track will stage six qualifying meetings next season, where athletes can pick up points in their bid to qualify for the Final.

At each of the 12 qualification meetings, Athletes are awarded 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for ranking 1st to 8th respectively. The top 8 or 12 Athletes (depending on the discipline) will be awarded a start at the Final. In case of a tie, the best legal performance of the qualification phase wins.

That means that each discipline will have its own Diamond Journey around the world during the season.

To make sure you can follow your favourite disciplines as they unfold over the summer, here is the breakdown of the Diamond Journey for all track events.
