Throwback Thursday: Wayde Van Niekerk’s Diamond League Record

Throwback Thursday has come around again, and this week, you voted for Wayde Van Niekerk's stunning performance at last season's Athletissima in Lausanne.

It has been an incredible few years for Wayde Van Niekerk, who has established himself as the undisputed king of the 400m, and is staking his claim to go down in history as one of the sport’s greatest sprinters.

Alongside claiming Gold at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and being crowned IAAF World Champion in London last year, Van Niekerk has also delivered some superb performances in the IAAF Diamond League in the last few seasons.

The finest of them all came in Lausanne last July, where the South African laid down the gauntlet ahead of the World Championships, storming the field to secure a Diamond League Record.

Neck and neck with Isaac Makwala on the final bend, Van Niekerk surged ahead of the field on the home straight to cross the line in 43.62.

"I could see Isaac on the outside of me, and I think he pushed me on for a fair bit of the race," Van Niekerk told diamondleague.com.

He would follow up the brilliant performance with another Diamond League victory in Monaco later that month, though it was Makwala who claimed the Diamond Trophy at the end of the season.
