Thiam squares up to Mahuchikh in Brussels

World heptathlon champion Nafi Thiam will face Ukrainian star and Diamond League title favourite Yaroslava Mahuchikh at the penultimate Wanda Diamond League meeting of the season in Brussels on September 2nd.

Fresh from regaining her hepthathlon world title in Oregon this week, Belgian star Nafi Thiam can set her sights on a world class showdown with Wanda Diamond League title favourite Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the women’s high jump in Brussels later this season.

Thiam overcame reigning world champion Katharina Johnson-Thompson to claim her second title at the World Athletics Championships on Monday, and can now look forward to a single event battle with Mahuchikh, who is herself hoping to claim a first world title in Oregon.

It will be the Belgian’s first Diamond League appearance since she competed in Brussels three years ago and a chance to pick up her first win on the circuit since her long jump triumph in Birmingham in 2019.

Thiam will be hoping that home advantage can help her spring a surprise against Mahuchikh, who will compete for the women’s high jump world title on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian star is out to make 2022 a year of global gongs, as she looks to add a first world title and a first Diamond League title to the world indoor gold she picked up in March.

Having missed out on the title by a whisker in a dramatic final last season, she is already dominating this year’s Diamond League with victories Eugene, Rabat and Paris.
