Diamond League Memories – Part II

In the second and final part of our Wanda Diamond League Memories series, US hurdles star Aries Merritt and Qatar's multiple Diamond Trophy winner Mutaz Essa Barshim look back on their favourite moments on the circuit.

With just four days to go until the 2021 Wanda Diamond League season kicks off in Gateshead, we take another look back at some of the most memorable moments from a decade of athletics’ most prestigious series – as told by the athletes who made them happen.

Aries Merritt

The US hurdle star became the first athlete ever to break a world record on the Diamond League circuit when he ran 12.80 in Brussels in 2012, just a few weeks after claiming Olympic gold in London.

“The field was stacked…I just showed up and showed out,” chuckles the 35-year-old.

Mutaz Essa Barshim

The Qatari high jump star almost broke the world record himself when he jumped 2.43m to win the Diamond Trophy in Brussels two years later, but somewhat surprisingly, Barshim claims that his Diamond League record on that night was not his favourite memory on the circuit.

Watch the clip below to find out which performance he treasures even more highly than his 2014 triumph.

The meeting will be streamed in a number of territories on the Wanda Diamond League YouTube page , as well as via broadcasters around the world.
