Top stories
For those with a bit more time, sit back and enjoy as we guide you through the top stories from Doha.
Double Diamond Trophy holder Caterine Ibargüen got her long jump defence off to a winning start with a jump of 6.76m, but fellow reigning champion Tom Walsh was pipped to victory in the shot put by long-term rival Ryan Crouser. Walsh admitted before the meeting that it annoys him when Crouser wins, so expect a fiercely contested rivalry this season.
There were some thrilling head-to-heads in the middle distance races as well, as Nijel Amos won a thrilling battle with Diamond Trophy holder Emmanuel Korir in the 800m, and Elijah Manangoi held off reigning champion Timothy Cheruiyot in the 1500m.
Caster Semenya, meanwhile, set a new meeting record of 1:54.98 in the women’s 800m while Hellen Obiri won a thrilling battle with Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba in the women’s 3000m.
In the sprints, Ramil Guliyev crowned himself prince of the Doha track with victory in 19.99 in the men’s 200m, while Dina Asher-Smith looked in ominous form as she sailed ahead of a world class field in the women’s event. Asher-Smith narrowly missed out on both Diamond Trophies last season, and looks set to be in running again this year.
The performance of the night, however, goes to Daniel Stahl, who cleared the 70m mark with three of his four throws in the men’s discus and set a new Diamond League record of 70.56m.
