Five questions ahead of Doha

The wait is nearly over! The starting gun will fire on the Road To The Final at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on May 3. Ahead of the 2019 IAAF Diamond League opener, we have five questions which need answering this season and in Doha.

1. Can anyone match Mondo’s world lead?

The very first Diamond Discipline to kick off in Doha will be the men’s pole vault, and 2017 Diamond League Champion Sam Kendricks wants to use the opportunity to respond to his friend and rival Mondo Duplantis. Though he will not be in Doha, Duplantis set a world lead of 5.94m in Louisiana last week, and Kendricks is out to match that on the Diamond League stage.

"We are competing against each other, just on different sides of the ocean," said Kendricks. "He has set the bar high."

2. Will the shot putters chase the world record?

Diamond Trophy holder Tom Walsh was in jovial spirits ahead of launching his title defence in Doha on Friday. The New Zealander admitted he was enormously fired up to do battle with the likes of American rivals Ryan Crouser and Darrell Hill.

He also insisted that the men’s shot put is on the verge of hitting new levels of brilliance and – whisper it – the world record may be in danger.

"If you’re not throwing 22 metres at the moment, you are not in the mix, the shot put is so strong," he said. "That world record has been around too long."

3. How will athletes fare at the new stadium?

The Khalifa International Stadium in Doha will not only launch the tenth anniversary season of the IAAF Diamond League this year, it will also play host to the IAAF World Championships in the autumn.

The Doha Diamond League is therefore a first chance for many medal hopefuls to test themselves on the Khalifa track.

4. Who can defend their Diamond Trophy?

It is not just Walsh who is launching his Diamond Trophy defence in Doha. Other 2018 Diamond League Champions set to grace the Doha track on Friday include Brianna McNeal in the women’s 100m Hurdles and Caterine Ibargüen in the women’s long jump.

Others, such as British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, only narrowly missed out on Diamond League glory last year, and will be looking to get their hands on a first trophy in 2019.

5. Who will land the first blow in the 800m?

One of the most mouth-watering prospects at the Doha Diamond League this year is the men’s 800m, which has a field packed full of stars.

Diamond Trophy holder Emmanuel Korir is out to make a winning start to his title defence, while two-time winner Nijel Amos and other big names such as Wycliffe Kinyamal and Adam Kszczot will also be on the start list.
