As in previous years, this season will see the world’s best athletes go head-to-head in a season-long battle in the IAAF Diamond League.
In 2017, however, the format is changing. Athletes will compete throughout the year in a bid to qualify for one of the IAAF Diamond League Finals.
The IAAF #DiamondLeague will assume a championship format in 2017. Here’s an overview of how things will play out this summer! #DiamondDisciplines #DiamondJourney
In each of the Diamond Disciplines, athletes will earn points in either four or six qualifying meets. The top eight or twelve athletes at the end of the qualifying meets will have earned their place in the IAAF Diamond League Final, in either Zürich or Brussels.
There, they will have the chance to be crowned IAAF Diamond League Champion, to winning the iconic Diamond Trophy and a prize of USD 50,000.
In the jumps, throws and long distance disciplines, athletes will have the chance to pick up points in four qualifying meets, while in all other disciplines, there will be six chances to pick up points.
At any one qualifying meeting, an athlete can pick up between eight and one point, depending on where they finish on the night. Once the last qualifying meeting has taken place, the top eight or twelve athletes in the overall standings progress to the Final.
That means that, at each of the IAAF Diamond League Finals in Zürich and Brussels, the fields will be packed exclusively with athletes who have performed consistently over the entire IAAF Diamond League season.
The final weekend of the season will then see the very best performers of the year go head-to-head in a stunning finale to crown all 32 IAAF Diamond League Champions!
