Tune into Colin Jackson’s Zürich preview – live on the Diamond League Facebook from 9pm CEST this Wednesday
1. Röhler sets the tone in the javelin in Doha
It has been an incredible year in the men’s javelin, and Thomas Röhler set the tone early in the opening Diamond League meeting of the season, throwing an astonishing 93.90m. His qualification was never in doubt, and in Zürich, he will come up against compatriot Johannes Vetter, who has since bettered Röhler’s mark and beaten him to gold in the World Championships.
2. Warholm bursts onto the scene in Oslo
Norwegian talent Karsten Warholm is now a world champion and a household name in the 400m hurdles, but before his home meeting in Oslo this season, not even many Norwegians knew who he was. That soon changed as he beat Olympic champion Kerron Clement, setting a national record of 48.25. A further victory in Stockholm saw him secure qualification for the Final.
3. Schippers races to victory in Lausanne
Dafne Schippers may have surrendered her 100m crown at the world championships, but she made up for it by defending her 200m title, success coming off the back of a brilliant season in the half lap sprint. Among her fine performances was a victory in 22.10 in Lausanne.
4. Ibargüen shows steel in Monaco
Caterine Ibargüen has dominated every competition in the triple jump in recent years, and it is only the emergence of Yulimar Rojas which kept her from winning gold in London. Off the back of that, she will be determined to defend her Diamond Trophy in Zürich, and performances such as her 14.86 win in Monaco and her victory over Rojas in Birmingham show that the Colombian legend is not to be written off.
5. Barshim takes the bar in Birmingham
Mutaz Essa Barshim took gold in the high jump in London, and he will be on a mission in Zürich to reclaim the Diamond Trophy he lost to Erik Kynard last summer. The Qatari star is in flying form, as he proved in the last qualifying meet in Birmingham, setting a meeting record and a world leading height with 2.40m, and taking the bar home as a souvenir.
