2016 was an incredible year for both Dafne Schippers and Elaine Thompson. Throughout the season, the two sprinters were neck and neck in all competitions, and the Diamond League was no exception.
After Schippers had triumphed at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing in 2015, the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio were to be Thompson’s hour of glory, as she claimed gold over both 100m and 200m.
In the Diamond League, the flying Dutchwoman and the Jamaica’s lightning lady continued their gripping rivalry in both disciplines.
Both remained in the Diamond Race right until the end of the season. They both finished in the top two in both the 100m and the 200m, with Thompson winning the Diamond Trophy over the shorter distance and Schippers triumphing over the longer.
@dafne_schippers and @fastelaine gave us one of the most brilliant Diamond League duels last season. Will there be another chapter written in 2017? #DiamondLeague #100m #200m
